of ecological stewardship

Welcome to our beginning

Who are we?

Skybird is a 501(c)(3) non-profit Wildlife Rehabilitation Center located in the beautiful and quaint Durham, Maine. We are a modern hub for clinical wildlife care, along with providing ecological activities for the greater community.

Currently, we are a team of professionals working hard to bring the wonderful vision of Skybird to fruition.

Mission

Every creature deserves another chance to fly or crawl free.

Skybird serves to rescue, rehabilitate, and release Maine’s wildlife.

We dedicate our skills and knowledge to offer excellent and tender care to our wild citizens in need.

Who We Treat

Triaging Maine’s Wild Birds

Birds are critical to both local and global ecosystems, agriculture, and overall health of the planet. They are also simply beautiful, inspirational creatures we enjoy having around! Here at Skybird we view birds with a well-deserved reverence. Our expert team of veterinary professionals, wildlife rehabilitators, naturalists and general bird nerds are passionate about providing educated and thoughtful care to wild bird patients. This means having in-depth knowledge of each species, and catering specifically to their specialized, niche needs.

Once stabilized, birds are transferred to long term care facilities at some of our partner organizations here in Maine.

Rehabilitating Maine’s Wild Reptiles & Amphibians

So, we love turtles. Big time. These super ancient, one-of-a-kind shelled sentinels keep us humbled and in awe. Not only are they simply cool, turtles play vital roles in cross-ecosystem wellness; they are part of the clean-up crew, and remove and recycle waste. Their burrows are reused by mammals and their poop is ultra fertilizing and beneficial to soil, along with seed transportation. Either way, we’re here for turtles! A major goal of ours is to be one of Maine’s premier wild turtle rescue and rehab facility. This includes species-specific, specialized semi-terrestrial and aquatic pool habitats. These habitats can be modified depending on the individuals needs as they recuperate. We also love and readily admit snakes, and all amphibious critters as well- frogs, newts, toads, salamanders, and any slippery, slimy, shiny casualties. Understanding the delicate needs of “herptiles” (reptile & amphibians) is a specialty of ours.

IMMINENT GOALS 2025-2026:

Avian rehabilitation

Lead rehabilitator Tari has been working with wild birds since 2009, where she worked in rehab with native birds on Cape Cod and gained experience with songbirds, raptors, seabirds and all the like. This blossomed her unceasing passion for avian conservation and rehabilitation. Over the ensuing years Tari went on to gain knowledge & experience in higher education studying birds in the field, while also associating with other wildlife rehab centers, veterinary exotic specialty clinics, zoos, and wildlife sanctuaries between Maine, Massachusetts, Oregon and Washington, honing ideas, treatment modalities, and best rehab & clinical practices.

She became a Licensed Veterinary Technician, dedicated to clinical practices. In recent years she served as Clinic Manager at Avian Haven in Freedom, ME, and has managed veterinary technicians in local companion animal clinics. She is now so excited to continue to serve the Maine community as Skybird’s Founder. We are called Skybird because we are sincerely dedicated to helping birds reunite with the beautiful blue.

Our Vision

Skybird has a vision of operating from bright, bustling, rehabilitative space that caters specifically to wild animals of Maine.

We are building a committed, harmonious team who provides care.

In addition to being a hub for wildlife rehabilitation, our long-term goal is to offer the Maine community opportunities of learning and engagement.

This will be through on-site natural spaces, an educational animal sanctuary, and other features that will highlight local ecology and conservation.
