Skybird Wildlife Center of Maine
Wildlife Rescue, Rehabilitation, & Release
Community, Learning, Integration
Welcome to our beginning
Who are we?
Skybird is a 501(c)(3) non-profit Wildlife Rehabilitation Center located in the beautiful and quaint mid-coast Maine. We will be a modern hub for clinical wildlife care, along with providing ecological activities for the greater community.
Currently, we are a team of professionals working hard to bring the wonderful vision of Skybird to fruition.
Vision
Skybird has a vision of operating from bright, bustling, clinical and rehabilitative space that caters specifically to wild animals of Maine.
We are building a committed, harmonious team who provide care.
In addition to being a hub for wildlife rehabilitation, our long-term goal is to offer the Maine community opportunities of learning and engagement.
This will be through on-site natural spaces, an educational animal sanctuary, and other features that will highlight local ecology and conservation.
Mission
Every creature deserves another chance to fly or crawl free.
Skybird will serve to rescue, rehabilitate, and release Maine’s wild birds, reptiles & amphibians, and select mammal species.
We will dedicate our skills and knowledge to offer excellent and tender care to our wild citizens in need.
🝔🝔 Community engagement is at the heart of ecological stewardship 🝔🝔
✜Who We Treat✜
Maine’s Wild Birds
Birds are critical to both local and global ecosystems, agriculture, and overall health of the planet. They are also simply beautiful creatures we enjoy having around! Here at Skybird we view birds with a well-deserved reverence. Our expert team of veterinarians, vet techs, wildlife rehabilitators, naturalists and general bird nerds are passionate about providing educated and thoughtful care to our wild bird patients. This means having in-depth knowledge of each species, and catering specifically to their specialized, niche needs as they heal or grow. It’s exciting to think about the creative possibilities to best suite their stay with us, so they are as vital as possible before returning to the wild. We intend on designing perfect spaces for every bird to feel safe and heal well, whether a small temporary comfort tent, or outdoor aviaries to stretch those wings.
Maine’s Wild Reptiles & Amphibians
So, we love turtles. Big time. These super ancient, one-of-a-kind shelled sentinels keep us humbled and in awe. Not only are they simply cool, turtles play vital roles in cross-ecosystem wellness; they are part of the clean-up crew, and remove and recycle waste. Their burrows are reused by mammals and their poop is ultra fertilizing and beneficial to soil, along with seed transportation. Either way, we’re here for turtles! A major goal of ours is to be Maine’s premier wild turtle rescue and rehab facility. This includes species-specific, specialized semi-terrestrial and aquatic pool habitats. These habitats can be modified depending on the individuals needs as they recuperate. We also love and readily admit snakes, and all amphibious critters as well- frogs, newts, toads, salamanders, and any slippery, slimy, shiny casualties. Understanding the delicate needs of “herptiles” (reptile & amphibians) is a specialty of ours.
Maine’s Wild Mammals
And last, but certainly not least, we intend to also provide the best and coziest care to select mammal species of Maine, including opossums, cottontail rabbits & hare, mice, and squirrels to start. These fuzzy and fast moving (except opossums, North America’s only marsupials!) are everywhere, and offer their gifts to the ecosystem year round- one example being prolific planters of trees and vegetation! We need them, and we’ll be here for them if the need arises. We have professionals on our team who have raised, sheltered, rehabbed and released wild mammals of all sorts, and we look forward to being a haven for a hare.
We’re on the move
-
We are an incorporated non-profit with the state of Maine. We recently obtained our 501(c)(3) status.
A stellar Board of Directors has been recruited with connections in allied professional fields.
-
We are spearheading fundraising and outreach efforts in the shape of attending and networking at community events. We’re linking up with interested investors, and grant writing. Our estimates and needs are in order to work on financing the big and little things.
A major part of bringing this vision to fruition is the active search for a parcel of land or any utility space to get Skybird up and running.
-
To uphold our mission as one of Maine’s finest wildlife care centers.
To thrive in a clinical center that is well-equipped, modern, and just right for every wild patient and human doing the work.
To provide the Maine community with a space for thoughtful, ecological interactions and engagement. Examples are interpretive walking trails, participatory farms and gardens, and stewardship learning experiences led by accomplished doers.
